The Miami Marlins have urgency and a settled routine on their side. The New York Mets arrive with a young starter returning to the majors and a bullpen bridge that may need a few extra planks.
Pérez has room to work, and the Marlins need every inning
Eury Pérez is firmly listed to start on normal rest, with no reported workload restriction. His latest outing in Kansas City exposed loose fastball location and home-run trouble, but there was no accompanying injury or velocity alarm.
The correction is straightforward, if not easy: keep the heater out of hittable vertical zones and land the slider and curveball below the bats. Pérez’s angle can produce poor barrel contact when he gets north-south separation rather than simply throwing hard through the middle.
The Marlins remain in the National League Wild Card chase, leaving little room for another poor home series. Sunday’s convincing win featured production throughout the order after two uneven games, a useful sign for a young lineup that can run hot, cold and occasionally sideways.
Kyle Stowers started at designated hitter throughout the weekend, keeping his bat available while reducing stress on his hamstring. Xavier Edwards remains sidelined by a sprained left thumb, with mlb.com reporting that inflammation and difficulty squeezing the hand had delayed his return.
Miami’s bullpen lacks a fixed ninth-inning anchor with Pete Fairbanks and Anthony Bender unavailable. Even so, Calvin Faucher, Tyler Zuber, Jack Ralston and Dax Fulton enter with more favorable rest patterns than Victor Vodnik, who worked on consecutive days.
Tong brings better form, but the bridge behind him looks thin
Jonah Tong is scheduled for his first major-league appearance since early June and his first MLB start since last September. Interim manager Andy Green announced the assignment, although the corresponding active-roster move was still pending Sunday evening.
Tong returns after mechanical problems and uneven Triple-A results earlier in the season. His delivery stabilized during his latest minor-league stretch, which included a near no-hit bid, and he offered a blunt assessment of the difficult year: mlb.com quoted him saying, “I own that. I wear that.”
When Tong repeats his high-slot delivery, the fastball angle and curveball can generate awkward swings. When the mechanics drift, noncompetitive misses create hitter-friendly counts and force the bullpen phone to ring earlier than planned.
The Mets won Sunday with late home runs from Bo Bichette and Brett Baty, but the offense did not apply steady pressure throughout the afternoon. The club then traveled from New York to Miami for an early start, increasing the possibility that at least one veteran receives rest.
That turnaround also complicates the relief plan. Jonathan Pintaro supplied length Sunday, Tobias Myers handled the eighth and Kodai Senga worked the ninth, while Devin Williams remains unavailable with a shoulder problem.
Big gaps and a stable roof favor clean execution
First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 PM ET at loanDepot park, where hot and humid conditions are expected outside. The roof had not been officially confirmed, although closure appears more likely than a fully open-air game, and the later storm risk should arrive beyond the playing window.
The spacious park generally suppresses routine fly-ball damage and places more value on gap defense, speed and aggressive baserunning. Miami showed that pressure game Sunday, an approach that can test Tong’s tempo and command from the stretch.
This is the opener of a three-game series, not a getaway spot. The Marlins stayed home after Sunday’s game, while the Mets had to pack, fly and report for a daytime assignment.
The cleaner route through nine innings belongs to Miami
Pérez gives the Marlins the more dependable path into the middle innings because he is listed without a special workload limit. Tong may pitch well, as he has against Miami in limited previous meetings, but his return from Triple-A carries a wider range of command and length outcomes.
If Tong needs an early hook, New York must cover additional outs with secondary relievers carrying Sunday mileage. Miami has several rested alternatives and can attack the call-up with patient at-bats, then add pressure on the bases when he works from the stretch.
The risks are clear: Pérez recently struggled to control traffic, and Miami has no settled closer. Those concerns make run suppression difficult to trust, but they do not erase the Marlins’ advantages in rest, starter workload and bullpen flexibility at a generous home price.
Tong’s active-roster move was still pending Sunday evening, creating a small late-change risk. Any replacement would alter the pitching matchup, even though New York’s travel disadvantage and relief workload would remain.
