Cubs have already taken Gusto’s measure

Kevin Gausman is listed to start on seven full days of rest, though his fastball-splitter execution has been uneven. When the splitter stays down, the plan works; when it floats or misses the zone, hitters can sit on the fastball.

That volatility matters less for this wager than Chicago’s familiarity with Ryan Gusto. The Cubs generated repeated traffic and hard contact against him on September 5, with Conforto taking him deep and Gusto failing to complete five innings.

Alex Bregman is expected to miss the series after suffering multiple facial fractures in an on-deck-circle accident, as mlb.com reported. His absence removes a disciplined middle-order bat, but Chicago can still stack left-handed and switch-hitting pressure against Gusto.

Marlins are short on late-inning certainty

The Marlins have been eliminated and are evaluating players, but the lineup has not packed away the bats. Otto Lopez remains a contact-and-speed problem, while Griffin Conine offers left-handed thunder off the bench.

Gusto is listed as Miami’s probable starter after six full rest days. His mid-90s fastball gives him enough raw material, but location has been the separator, and Chicago recently prevented his secondary mix from establishing a clean rhythm.

The larger issue waits behind him. Miami has lost closer Pete Fairbanks and setup arm Anthony Bender for the season, leaving Calvin Faucher, Michael Petersen and a committee to handle leverage work, according to mlb.com.

Xavier Edwards is also day-to-day after aggravating his left thumb. Miami’s recent defensive mistakes are especially troublesome behind a starter who permits contact; extra outs have a way of becoming crooked innings.

Wrigley’s wind favors hard, low contact

First pitch is scheduled for 7:40 PM ET, with temperatures falling from the low 60s into the upper 50s. An east to east-northeast wind is expected to blow in from right-center or center, taking some carry away from routine fly balls.

That does not reduce Chicago’s scoring route to home-run luck. Line drives, speed and gap contact still play, and Wrigley’s outfield can punish poor positioning with an extra base.

Four Cubs runs do not require a slugfest

Chicago’s edge is specific: familiar starter, sustained traffic and a compromised bullpen behind him. Crow-Armstrong, Busch, Ian Happ and Conforto can make Gusto work from the left side, then add pressure on the bases if he allows early runners.

If Gusto is chased before the middle innings are complete, Miami has no fixed closer or dependable setup bridge waiting. The Cubs do not need to solve the entire game; they need one productive pass through the order and another inning built against uncertain relief.

Backing the team total also avoids tying the wager to Gausman’s command or Chicago’s unsettled ninth-inning structure. Four Cubs runs is the firm call, with line-drive contact and bullpen mileage doing the work.
