He took the loss Thursday, so the Marlins may need several innings from their freshly rested bullpen if his high-slot, slider-heavy look does not last through repeated trips around the order.

Atlanta has clinched the NL East and is preparing for the Wild Card Series. Brent Suter is listed as its probable starter, though he arrived as a left-handed reliever; the length of his outing is an open question, not a conventional starter's assignment.

The Braves used Ray Kerr, Grant Holmes and Didier Fuentes in Friday's loss, with Holmes and Fuentes surrendering Miami's late homers. Atlanta still has dangerous bats in Ronald Acuña Jr., Matt Olson and Michael Harris II, but its staff has postseason workloads to manage after that relief usage.

A roof decision, not a wind angle

Saturday's late-afternoon game is at loanDepot park, where the roof status has not been confirmed. A closed roof would take the light outside wind and possible later showers largely out of play, so neither is a sound basis for a run-line call.

The extra run fits the pitching plans

Miami's clearest advantage is bullpen availability precisely when Ralston may need help. The Marlins can stay close without asking him to work deep, while Atlanta must decide how much to use a staff it needs for the postseason.

Ralston's unproven length is a real risk, and neither probable starter is guaranteed to take the ball. That makes a Marlins outright win a bigger ask; the extra run covers a close loss as well as another Miami win.
