Mertens’ 6-3, 6-3 win over Gauff is a useful result, but not a clean measure: Gauff was flat and physically depleted. Before it, Mertens needed three sets against Volynets and Ostapenko, and Chwalinska had exposed her discomfort against changes of height, pace and spin.

Swiatek has added purposeful direction changes and controlled aggression, and her 6-1, 6-3 win over Jovic was her clearest Beijing performance. Mertens’ second serve has looked vulnerable; Swiatek has been effective attacking second serves. Two long singles matches, plus doubles, leave Mertens less room for another dip. Under 19.5 games is the play: the line leans toward a competitive match, while a routine Swiatek straight-set win can stay below it.

The two previous meetings were straight-set wins for Swiatek, though Mertens pushed one set to a tie-break. Swiatek’s match price looks about right. Her −5.5 handicap is less useful: 6-4, 6-3 would win but not cover. The tie-break, or Mertens taking a set, remains the risk.
